Idea and objective: The idea of the project is to establish a link between artists in Berlin (resident and non-resident) with organizers of activities for children living in temporary residences housing families in situation of refuge and forced migration. The objective is to provide the children with a different set of extracurricular activities on top of those provided by the organizers and social workers.
Implementation and sensitivities: Alongside organizers from associations and social workers from the residences, case-specific organization is undertaken to carry out a series of artistic workshops in different disciplines (music, dance, body percussion, illustration, crafts). The organization of the workshops follows precise coordination with organizers and social workers regarding the schedules and needs of the residences.
A paramount element of the organization and implementation of the workshops is the awareness of the circumstances: children in the residencies have faced a process of forced migration on the grounds of several dimensions of violence, from socio-economic violence to war; most children in the residences are racialized. Therefore, workshop leaders receive an input on migration and racism in order for awareness to be guaranteed.
Workshops: So far workshops have been conducted in the summer of 2017, 2018 and 2019. Participant artists have been Fidel Minda, musician and choreographer; Marc Majewski, illustrator and children’s bookmaker; Brenda Brown, plastic artist and primary school art teacher.
All workshops are designed and conducted on a voluntary, non-for-profit, ad-hoc donation basis.
