The Ricote Valley. A critical spatiality is an experimental project that tries to read the interrelationships between planetary changes and the local landscape of a vast water system: the Segura river. The objective is to rediscover a natural, cultural and technological space through ‘site-specific’ research and action. This space is embedded in an eroded and desertified landscape that is one of the largest producers of fruits, vegetables and flowers in and for Europe.
Time and again, the course of the Segura River has been changed by the construction of irrigation ditches, azudes and dams to cover the water supply for both non-urban and urban areas. This makes it one of the most regulated rivers in the world.
An example of these interventions are the orchards adjacent to the river bank. Watered by a ditch system, they are the result of many cultures and still retain the original Arab character. Fruits and vegetables are produced here for the local market. This fine old pattern contrasts with new and larger-scale areas of intensive monoculture, where mechanical hydraulic systems and the use of groundwater ensure water supply. The overall result is a highly efficient cultural landscape.

The project is based on the understanding of water as an index, as a sensor and as a means of investigating interlocking processes. The concept of “critical spatialities” brings to the fore questions about the interdependencies between nature, socio-political processes and technology and the resulting socio-ecological and economic realities.
These constantly changing realities require the identification of their actors (humans and non-humans) and their agencies. Tensions and asymmetric relationships are present in most cases. Here, “Critical” means that all actors are involved in changing narratives thanks to tensions, conflicts, negotiations and transformations. “Spatialities” describes the dynamic and complex processes of interaction between physical space and the cultural and natural components that produce it.
The project starts from the idea that cultural and natural systems, and therefore urban and non-urban systems, are seamlessly intertconnected. The exchange processes that take place between the two systems become a central issue. However, this is not primarily concerned with a purely quantitative and functional analysis. Rather, the concrete spatial manifestation stands out as the physical imprint of complex metabolic processes.
Such an approach opens up wide opportunities to reprogram urban and non-urban areas, to initiate innovative and regenerative processes and practices, and to increase awareness and alternative forms of knowledge production.

Este fino patrón antiguo contrasta con áreas nuevas y de mayor escala de monocultivo intensivo, en las que los sistemas hidráulicos mecánicos y el uso de agua subterránea aseguran el suministro de agua.
